The Mandate: In the year of 1773, the British Parliament passed the Tea Act, which gives a monopoly of the sale of tea to a British company, the East India Company. This comes with a mandatory tax. Feeling this is unjust, a group of men form a secret organization, the Sons of Liberty, and plan to destroy a large quantity of tea from the East India Company. The two sides argue their respective positions in the lead up to the Boston Tea Party. Is the monopoly and tax fair? What justifies each side’s stance on the issue? How do the Sons of Liberty justify their plan to disguise themselves as Native Americans to evade responsibility for their protest?
About the Chairs
Pilar Bates, 10th Grade
My name is Pilar Bates and I am a rising sophomore at the Masters school. I have been doing Model UN for three years since the seventh grade. Through Model UN I was able to find my confidence, and later my love, of public speaking. I was also able to create new friends on the teams and grow my understanding of how the world works through a Model UN lens. Outside of MUN I love to make art. This including drawing painting and animation. In addition to art I play soccer and basketball, which I love. This will be my third MASMUNC conference and I am so exited to be the chair for this specialized committee. We chose the topic the Boston Tea Party because we felt that it was an interesting historical event that was very multifaceted. We thought that this would make a fun and compelling Model Un committee for MASMUNC this year.

Hi! My name is Sally Dwek, and I am a junior at The Masters School. I'm so excited to be co-chairing for the Boston Tea Party Committee! Outside of Model UN I love skiing, my dogs, and hanging out with my friends! I have been on the Masters Model UN team since my sophomore year, and it's become one of my favorite activities because I enjoy debating, public speaking, and meeting new people! I’m really looking forward to MASMUNC III and seeing everyone’s hard work and creativity in committee. Good luck, and I can't wait to see you all in committee!
