The Fate of the Republic: Rome, 86 BC

The year is 102 BC. Gaius Marius has been appointed consul for the fourth time by the Senate in order to keep the Teuton and Cimbri armies at bay with his army of plebeians. In his absence, the populares are fighting a series of political battles to keep the optimates, led by Lucius Cornelius Sulla, from seizing full control of Rome. The air is charged with tension, both between Rome and the barbarian armies and between opposing political parties inside the heart of the city. Will Gaius Marius be victorious and return to Rome to keep the optimates in check, will his failure result in a civil war between the two parties, or will the optimates take advantage of his absence to take control of Rome?

About the Chairs

Waverly Beckwith, 10th grade, (she/her)

Hi, I’m Waverly! This is my 5th year at Masters and my 3rd year in MUN. I am so excited to be chairing the Ancient Rome committee because Roman history is one of my favorite interests, and MUN is an amazing opportunity to bring that passion to life. I love MUN because it is a great way to be part of a community and to grow more confidence as a public speaker, writer, collaborator, and so many other important skills and opportunities. MUN has been such a meaningful experience for me and I hope that it will bring the same growth and enjoyment to all of you! I can’t wait for MASMUNC and to see what you all will bring to the committee!

June Dodson, 10th Grade

My name is June Dodson. I am a sophomore, and this is my second year doing Model UN. I chose the topic of Ancient Rome because I am interested in the classical world, specifically Greece and Rome. I love the community that MUN provides. I always know that there will be someone to support me if I need help. When I first began MUN to improve my public speaking skills, I was afraid that I would be judged for a lack of experience; however, everyone was so supportive and I felt right at home. Being a part of MUN has really helped me bond with people that I wouldn't bond with otherwise. I can't wait for MASMUNC, because I know that our team will make it an amazing experience for both new and experienced delegates.
